Aircraft therefore serve a genuine function rather than a novelty one: they are the only way most visitors will stand on névé at 2,000 metres and return the same afternoon. Filmmakers understood this early, and the burn's ice cave systems have appeared in feature productions since the 2010s. Weather governs everything. The divide wrings moisture from the Tasman Sea, delivering several metres of precipitation annually to the western catchments while Wānaka, sixty kilometres east, stays comparatively dry.
